“Oh, I understand. Work comes first.”
Margaret watched him go, feeling their love fade.
When she returned home, the silence haunted her. She had no idea how she was going to make things right. But her daughters, Lisa and Rosa, entered, distracting her from her disturbing thoughts.
“Mom, there’s something different about you today. Everything is fine ?” Lisa asks, looking worried.
Margaret tries to smile. It made her feel good to know that they cared about her. And then Rosa said something nice: “Mom, you’re really pretty, you know?”
These words made Margaret feel stronger. She realized that she didn’t have to wait for Tom to notice her. She had her daughters, and that was enough.
With new energy, she said to them: “You know what, girls? Everything will be alright. Even better than good.”
It was like she was saying she was done being sad because Tom didn’t care about her. Like she was ready to take on whatever came her way, just her and her daughters.
